History

This website is intended for anyone faced with the challenge of drilling a hole in the ground. It sounds a lot easier than it, quite often, turns out! Seems like the best holes are drilled by those who:

  1. Know what the hell they are doing, and
  2. Have the right equipment to accomplish the task at hand.

I can help with both, but you can not “wish” a hole into the ground! You have to be prepared to attack it, fight it, auger it, core it, hammer it, case it or slurry it! You have to do whatever it takes to make the hole.

I have pulled the levers on Texomas, Watsons, Spiradrills, Soilmecs, Bauers, Casagrandes and IMTs to name a few. I have never drilling with an LDH, thank God for that! I have open holed, slurried, cased and cheated holes into the ground from South Dakota to South Carolina and from Lost Wages to Los Cruces.

In igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary, SGC, wet sand and slop. I have suffered the costs of aggressive and careless operators and suffered the extremes of weather from the deserts of Arizona to the mountain tops of Colorado. Sometimes we actually made good money, sometimes the GC or the owner got the best of us. I have the battle scares of many years in the seat and even down the hole, as PhD, professional hole driller.

One thing I did learn and I will preach ‘til my last breath, you need to “get smart”, before you do something stupid! It amazes me how many contractors do it the other way around. Big ones too, they hire some wet behind the ears hot dog that thinks he knows everything and before long…you got it, he’s really got things fowled up.

The International Association of Foundation Drilling (ADSC)—that’s right, for those of you that don’t know, it was called the Association of Drill Shaft Contractors, but the crew wanted to keep ADSC, because it spins off the tongue a little easier than I-A-F-D—anyway, this organization was the best thing that ever happened to our industry. From education to intervention, this is an advocacy group that can help any contractor willing to invest in his own success.

If you enjoy screwing up jobs and making it more difficult for everyone else trying to do it right, then you don’t need the ADSC. If you want to be more professional and learn how other successful contractors are getting the job done, then you should be involved in the ADSC.

I have been drilling in that Gold Mine since 1991 and it has been a terrific relationship. Some of my best friends and most of my industry education came from this organization. After years serving on committees, serving as a board member and officer, I can truthfully say that the ADSC was the best thing that happened to me in my professional career.

The support, friendships, the professional impact and knowledge base is unparalleled by any specialty association. It is what you make it and your involvement is an investment in your success.

I have been involved in other trade groups, but never with one that was so truly helpful as the ADSC. Your involvement is not mandatory by any means, but if you want to give your firm the best chance for success, then…get involved.

Now, that was an unsolicited free advertisement for the ADSC, wasn’t it!

In September of 2001, I was in shock like many of you. The world as we knew it was changed forever. The impact was almost immediate. My growing drilling business was sitting idle while the world waited for the next big thing. Owners shelved big projects and the industry started to panic.

For years, I had prospered in the foundation drilling business, but now I was losing money and I needed to change with the times. I couldn't "right-size" fast enough. I closed the Denver operation, then Phoenix and finally Albuquerque. Between general contractors, geo-techs, banks and insurance companies, I knew something had to change. As it turned out, it was me!

Marketing was my forte, and buying and selling construction equipment just came naturally. As an outgrowth of my own business liquidation, foundationdrilling.com was developed with the help of my son, Cody. After completing his undergraduate degree at Northern Arizona University in Electronic Media, it only made since for him to help put buyers and sellers together with a little help from the Internet.

The result of our successful liquidation was that we had more buyers than equipment…so I put a seller in California together with a buyer in Texas and buyers in California together with sellers in Colorado and so on and so on…and today we are still improving, growing and evolving.

We are investing in our future and you should too!

If you want to buy or sell a rig - or an entire company - call us or drop us an email. We look forward to hearing from you.
